What an amazing turn out we had here at Standown Park with Veterans coming from all over Australia arriving from as early as the previous week end.
Thursday the 17th August was the beginning of the activities with a Basic First Aid course conducted by Heartbeat Gympie for 30 Veterans and partners. It was a good thing to do as you never know when you might need the information.
In the afternoon we had what was to be Mini markets but turned out to be bigger than Ben Hur with The Gypsy Coffee and Cooloola Berries vans providing their favourites and all the stall holders selling their wares. Narelle from Aloma Massage was kept busy way into the night, so there were a lot who had a few wrinkles ironed out.
To top off the evening we had the free sausage sizzle while being entertained by Phil King who had us all up toe taping.
Long Tan Day began with 78 fronting up for the Veterans mini Olympic games. They must have had a fun time or a lot of cheating going on as there was a lot of laughter ringing out over the grounds.
After a shared lunch 71 Veterans marched to the Memorial for a very moving Service conducted by Ret. RSM Noel Huish OAM and Pastor Peter Rodriguez.
One of the many highlights, was when 6 year old Lincoln Marshall placed a signature brick in the wall in honour of his two Great Granddads.
Thank you to the Kia Ora State School students and the many visitors who came from Gympie, Hervey Bay and Tin Can Bay for the day, including two local Gympie Councillors.
The day was completed with a good old corned meat and veges and dessert meal and entertainment by Bill Guy.
That was not the end, as 44 of the campers hopped on three buses early next morning leaving Standown for a great day touring Fraser Island. They are still talking about the trip and especially the food supplied.
As if that was not enough to exhaust us, the usual ladies night was on Sunday evening at Cooloola Berries where Kym and Jason made a delicious Chicken and Chorizo Paella for the 30 of us. The best part of that night is the men take us and then come and collect us. Thanks guys.
So if you missed out this year, get in early for next year as many of the powered site are booked already.
